Day 8 - Mother’s Day - Blue Roof: Babies Born Negative
Worldwide, only half of all pregnant women living with HIV have access to the medicine they need to protect their unborn children. And two-thirds of children born HIV+ do not have access to the medicine they need to stay alive. In Africa alone, 1,000 babies were born with HIV today. Only half of them will live to see the age of 2.
Located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal where the prevalence of HIV among adults is more than 40%, KCA’s Blue Roof Wellness Centre addresses the stark reality of mothers living with HIV every day. This Mother’s Day, KCA is proud to share with you the success of the Blue Roof’s PMTCT program – Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV. The mothers of the beautiful babies born below were diagnosed with HIV while pregnant, and were subsequently initiated onto treatment to reduce the risk of passing HIV onto their babies. All of the sweet souls below were born HIV-negative.
In our work, where not every story has a happy ending, these babies represent a new beginning. All born HIV-negative, they are the lucky ones who can grow up and say, “HIV ended with me.” This is why we do what we do at Keep a Child Alive. Text BUYLIFE to 90999 to give $10 to help KCA continue these daily inspirational stories of hope, love and strength.
